Fancy a Google Calendar on your desktop? Here is how to make it happen.

Requirement

  • Active Desktop Calendar 6.1 or later

Make it work

Active Desktop Calendar can read events directly from Google Calendars and show them on the desktop. To establish connection with a Google Calendar:

  • log in to your Google Calendar account
  • click Manage Calendars
  • click on name of the calendar you want to connect to
  • click on ICAL icon in the Private Address section
  • select and copy the link that you get in the pop-up window
  • now right click on Active Desktop Calendar's date icon in the taskbar area next to the system clock and choose Layers
  • click on Add Google layer button
  • type in some layer name for that calendar
  • paste the link you copied from Google into ICAL private address field and click Ok.

Repeat the same procedure to add more Google Calendars.

Important to know
Google Calendar's data are read-only and kept in a separate data layer marked with suffix "[GOOGLE]" in the list of layers. You will not be able to relocate, rename and clear data in this special layer. You can only disable it in the list or remove it completely. If you keep the mouse pointer over Google Calendar's layer name in the list for a couple of seconds you will see the last successful refresh date and time information in a tooltip.

Internet connection
Active Desktop Calendar has to use your Internet connection to get events from Google Calendars so if you have some firewall make sure it is configured properly to allow that activity.

Internet layer options
By default, all web based layers are refreshed every 60 minutes with additional options of 10 minutes and 5 hours. To change the refresh interval right click on the program's date icon in the taskbar, choose Settings, select Notes/Tasks Options tab and look for Internet Layer Options section.
This setting automatically applies to all web based layers you have.

Public Google Calendars
You should know that you are not limited to connecting to only your own private Google Calendars. You can connect to any Google Calendar for which you have an ICAL address. The procedure is exactly the same as described above with the difference that for public calendars you will click the ICAL icon for its Calendar Address instead of non-existing Private Address.
